SHIP Program

Disaster Mitigation Relief and Long Term Recovery for Home Rehabilitation

Due to the impact to our area from Hurricane Michael the Jackson County SHIP Program is now administered by the West Florida Regional Planning Council (WFRPC). All SHIP available funds are being utilized for Disaster/Mitigation Relief. These funds are considered a grant with a maximum amount of $15,000.00 per household. Families will be assisted in accordance with the Local Housing Assistance Plan's Disaster Mitigation Relief strategy.

At this time funds are limited; however, additional disaster relief funds are expected in the future. Disaster relief funds may be used for long term repairs or demolition and reconstruction projects.

There is a waiting list for assistance. You must contact WFRPC to be added to the list.

The program may help with:

  • Purchase of emergency supplies for eligible households to weatherproof damaged homes
  • Interim repairs may be made to avoid further damage like tree and debris removal to make the home habitable
  • Installation of wells or repair existing wells when public water is not available
  • Payment of insurance deductibles for rehabilitation of homes covered under homeowner's insurance policies

To be eligible:

  • Units assisted must be within Jackson County, Florida
  • The property must be owner occupied prior to the storm and after the home is livable
  • Modular homes are eligible in this strategy
  • Manufactured/Mobile homes are not eligible in this strategy
  • The Jackson County rehabilitation guidelines and purchasing policy will be followed for this strategy
  • The applicant may not have liquid assets (excluding retirement or IRA accounts) exceeding $10,000.00 in value
  • Applicants with homeowners insurance and flood insurance must provide policy information in their applications
  • SHIP funds must be used for eligible applicants and eligible housing
